Editor’s Pick: Hoka One One Clifton 5

$130; www.hokaoneone.com

I was first introduced to Hoka about 4 years ago, and ever since, I’ve been a big fan of the athletic shoe with the funny name. In fact, I still own that pair of Mafate 4s, which have proven to be extremely durable and well performing. When I opened the box and took a first glance at the Clifton 5, I was instantly impressed with the shoe’s sleek and modern look … much more so than the Mafate 4.

Now in its fifth iteration, the Clifton 5 is light, fast and cushiony. It features HOKA’s signature midsole geometry and a foam package that ensures consistent cushioning for running, walking and training.

The Clifton 5 midsole features a single, thick piece of EVA foam, which helps keep your foot centered over the thick cushioning. The Clifton 5 has a clean, engineered mesh upper (with fewer overlays) that optimizes breathability and comfort. This allows for a tighter lacing system, so you can dial in a more supportive run.

Its rockered shape helps to promote forward momentum no matter how the foot strikes, though it does take a few weeks to get used to.

Overall, the Clifton 5 offers a smooth, comfortable ride for running, walking and training. It comes in two widths, D and 2E wide. It retails for $130.
