Introducing Spiny 2, a second-generation portable e-bike conversion system built for cyclists who want electric assistance without buying a dedicated e-bike or permanently converting the one they already own. After a one-time mounting and sensor setup, the complete motor-and-battery unit attaches to the bike in just 3 seconds.
The compact friction-drive system delivers 250W nominal power, with peak output of up to 750W in the U.S., up to 35 Nm of torque, and up to 90 km (56 miles) of assisted range under ideal test conditions—all in a removable 2.2 kg (4.9 lb) package. Power output and maximum assisted speed are configured for each market, with versions tailored to applicable national and local requirements.
“Cyclists shouldn’t have to choose between the bike they already love and the convenience of electric assistance,” said Marco Cocchiarella, co-founder of Spiny. “We built Spiny 2 to make that choice unnecessary — giving riders real electric power when they want it, without turning their bike into a permanent e-bike.”
Spiny 2 uses dedicated cadence and speed sensors to detect rider input in real time. When pedaling begins, the motor engages the rear tire in approximately 0.25 seconds and delivers assistance according to the selected level. When pedaling stops, the motor lifts away from the tire, eliminating motor contact during unassisted riding.
Because the system does not replace the wheel hub, drivetrain, or brakes, Spiny 2 works across a wide range of road, city, hybrid, and touring bikes, with both rim and disc brakes. Optional Sport and Brompton adapters extend compatibility to tighter-clearance and folding-bike setups, while rear-suspension frames remain the primary exclusion.
Spiny 2 builds on an earlier version already used by more than 500 riders across Europe, whose real-world feedback helped shape the second-generation system around faster attachment, portability, and broader everyday compatibility.
Spiny 2 is available via Kickstarter. Worldwide delivery is currently estimated for April 2027, approximately five months after the campaign closes. Final shipping costs will vary by destination.
